i) Breaking Gender Stereotypes in Military Roles

Combat roles have traditionally been male-dominated, reinforcing the stereotype that women are less capable in physically demanding roles.

The induction of women into combat roles directly challenges this perception by proving that capability depends on training and merit, not gender.

Facts & Data:

India inducted its first women fighter pilots in 2016 (Avni Chaturvedi, Bhawana Kanth, Mohana Singh).

Women officers now serve in artillery units (since 2023), a key combat arm.

Women participation:

Indian Air Force: ~13–14%

Army: ~3–6%

Navy: ~6%

Globally, countries like the USA (since 2015) and Israel allow women in combat roles.

Israel has ~33% women in its military, including combat units.

Examples:

Women peacekeepers in UN missions have been highly effective in community engagement and conflict resolution.

India deployed an all-women Formed Police Unit in Liberia, which improved local trust and inspired recruitment of women locally.

👉 Impact on society:

Breaks the notion that “combat is only for men”

Encourages girls to enter STEM, defence, and leadership roles

Creates visible role models, shifting societal attitudes

(ii) Training and Preparedness for Women in Combat

Women in combat roles undergo rigorous and standardized training, ensuring they meet operational requirements.

Modern warfare is increasingly technology-driven, where skills like intelligence, coordination, and decision-making are as important as physical strength.

Facts & Data:

Women are now admitted into the National Defence Academy (NDA) since 2022, ensuring early military training.

In the US:

150+ women have completed the Army Ranger Course, one of the toughest combat trainings

India has opened:

Army Aviation Corps (women pilots)

Artillery and combat-support arms

Studies show mixed-gender teams often perform better due to diversity in problem-solving and communication.

Examples:

Women officers have served in counter-insurgency and peacekeeping missions, showing operational effectiveness.

Women pilots in the IAF have flown combat missions and sorties, demonstrating preparedness.

👉 Impact on society:

Expands the talent pool for national defence

Promotes merit-based selection

Encourages investment in training infrastructure and gender-neutral standards

(iii) Ensuring Equality and Inclusion in Military Forces

Inclusion of women in combat roles reflects constitutional principles of equality and non-discrimination.

It ensures that women have equal career opportunities, including leadership and command roles.

Facts & Data:

Supreme Court (2020) granted Permanent Commission to women officers in the Indian Army.

Women can now appear for NDA and SSB at par with men.

Women representation:

Army: ~6–7%

Navy: ~6%

Air Force: ~13–14%

Globally, over 100 countries now allow women in some form of combat roles.

Examples:

Increasing number of women in command and technical positions in Indian forces

Women officers leading units in logistics, aviation, and engineering roles

👉 Impact on society:

Promotes inclusive growth and equal opportunity

Acts as a model for other sectors like police, corporate, and governance

Strengthens democracy by ensuring representation of both genders in national security
